Full of beans: Melbourne marks International Coffee Day

It’s International Coffee Day today – so how much do Australians love their coffee? Alanah Hallam has been finding out.

Australians get through the equivalent of three kilos of coffee per person every year. It sounds like a lot – but we actually rank just 42nd in the world for coffee consumption.

You’d be forgiven for thinking we’re a lot higher in the rankings than that if you live in Melbourne, which is famous for its hipster cafes and coffee-infused lifestyle.

Our love affair with the dark brew goes back more than half a century, when post-war European migrants brought coffee machines en masse to the city in the 1950s and 1960s.

Nowadays you can get a darn good cup of coffee here anywhere, anytime – to the point where International Coffee Day is just a regular day like any other in Melbourne, according to the city’s top baristas:
