Some of journalism’s best digital minds have come together at Macleay College for The Walkley Foundation’s annual Editors Lab.
Reporters, developers and designers from newsrooms including ABC, SBS, AAP, Junkee and Fairfax Media, compete in the two-day hackathon in the hope of winning a trip to Vienna to compete in a global competition.
The three-person teams develop innovative prototypes that help journalists engage more deeply with their audiences, culminating in a five-minute pitch to a judging panel, which this year includes John Bergin from the Online News Association and Damian Cave from the New York Times.
Ideas have ranged from apps that allow the audience to send content to journalists in a more secure fashion, to more engagement with Aboriginal and Indigenous communities.
Participants spoke to Hatch journalist Amy Larkin about their ideas. – Interviews by Amy Larkin, Video production by Phil Logan
